British Bands At SXSW 2010 – Final List (Maybe) Now Live!

It can’t be easy orgainising SXSW, I appreciate that, so the fact that the list of showcasing bands has changed umpteen million times should surprise no-one. Still and all, the grid (hurray, the grid!) is now live on sxsw.com for all your nerdish planning needs, while I’ve weeded out the brits who are playing after the wotsit.

****UPDATE**** – sorry folks, the feed that puts all these bands on the page seems, helpfully, to be having a bit of an episode. So if you’re seeing this message, the list below is probably all wrong. You know that sport where hillbillies try and catch a greased-up pig? That’s my life, right there.

****UPDATE AGAIN**** – Right, that’s just fucking annoying. Why would you create a widget that only takes links from the CURRENT CALENDAR YEAR, and why would you do it WITHOUT AN OPTION TO CHANGE IT. Yahoo, you are not making my life any goddamn easier. The list is now down, so sorry if you’ve arrived here looking for it – it will be back shortly once I rebuild it by hand. Again, Yahoo, thanks a fucking bazillion. Bah.

Scottish Bands At SXSW 2010 – The View Are Out, Codeine Velvet Club, Mull Historical Society & Young Fathers Are In

Got word that the full list of Scottish Bands playing at SXSW 2010 is now finalised. Aside from We Were Promised Jetpacks, Hudson Mohawke, Unicorn Kid, Broken Records and the hotly-anticipated showcase from Frightened Rabbit, Young Fathers, Mull Historical Society and Codeine Velvet Club (featuring him off The Fratellis) are all on the bill, with The View “mysteriously” dropping off. You might not get a deep-fried Mars Bar in Austin, but you will get the soundtrack. Full Scottish list below, aye.

Ian MacLagan and Athlete Confirm As List Keeps Swelling

The Enormous Band List Of Doom just keeps on getting bigger, and from a quick whizz down the list, I can see that ever-such-nice-boys Athlete, as well as Ian MacLagan & The Bump Band (he was in the Small Faces, y’know) have been added to the British SXSW contingent.

The schedule still hasn’t gotten any more accurate, so the list’s still pretty unwieldy – and is anyone else having bands just arbitrarily deleted off your schedules? No? Just me, then.

Fanfarlo SXSW Showcase Confirmed

Showburner favourites Fanfarlo are to play at Californian radio station KCRW’s evening showcase on Weds, 17 Mar, representing Britain alongside a globe-spanning line-up including Ozomatli, Mike Snow, Choir Of Young Believers, Soko and Fitz And The Tantrums.

Fanfarlo’s Reservoir LP from last year was – and is – one of my favourite records, jam-packed full of glittering little gems. They only visit Scotland quite rarely, so the first time I caught them, ridiculously, was at SXSW a couple of years ago, and promptly went all gooey. The thing I like most is the sense that they’re the reverse of the iron fist / velvet glove thing, that underneath the robust and orchestral and soaring music is an extremely fragile core. A highlight, for sure.

Let us know if you hear of anyone we’ve missed – there’s probably loads, since there’s no longer an easy-to-scan list sorted by country yet. Latest scan through it shows up Stricken City, Pulled Apart By Horses and Marina And The Diamonds all added to the Brit-list. SXSW Preview – Allo Darlin’

In the first of what I really, really hope I can actually make into some kind of regular-ish series in the lead-up to March, I’ve bothered a few of my more favourite British bands playing at SXSW and pestered them with some fairly terrible questions. In the first one, the very loveliest Elizabeth from Allo Darlin’ spared the time to talk to us.

Allo Darlin’ are:

Elizabeth – Sings and plays the ukelele
Paul – Plays guitar and lapsteel and sings and other things
Bill – Sings and plays bass
Mike – Plays drums and percussion and singing sometimes

Bill and Elizabeth are both from Queensland. Mike and Paul are both from Kent.

Why Are You In A Band?

I have a compulsion to make songs that I can’t do anything about. It’s the only way I can make sense of things in my life. Plus it’s one of the most fun things you can do, making music with your friends.

Why Do You Sound Like That?

I have no idea why we sound like we do. Probably because of the sixties cassettes my parents used to play in the car on the way to the beach. I remember knowing Sloop John B pretty well when I was 5 or 6.

How Do The Songs Get Made?

I bring the songs with lyrics chords and melody to the band and play it on the uke, generally. Then we build it up together. Most of the songs on the album our producer Simon Trought contributed a lot to the arrangements as well.

What’s The Favourite Song You’ve Done?

The songs I’m most proud of on the album are “Silver Dollars” and “My Heart Is A Drummer”, both of which came together last minute and we weren’t quite sure if they were going to work. I’m also very proud of “Heartbeat Chilli”. I think it’s probably the best song I’ve written.

Why Will People Hate You?

I think some people will hate us because they see us being twee, which really irritates some people. I don’t know what that means really, and I don’t think we are. But I think it’s probably just the way I am and the way I come across, and I can’t really change that. We’ve definitely never set out to be cool.

Is The Music World Weird Now?

I think the Pirate Bay and things are just a fact of life now. I think giving things away for free has definitely helped raise awareness of our band. Our music is all over the net for free and it doesn’t bother me at all, I like the fact that people want to listen to it. I feel a bit sorry for our record label, because in the end we can still get paid for gigs and paid for the songs being on the radio or whatever. Bands never really made that much money from selling records anyway, really, unless you’re AC/DC or whoever. I used to record demos into my computer and put them up on my website the day I recorded them for free download. It’s a nice way to interact with your audience, I think.

Before going to SXSW for the very first time in March, Allo Darlin are doing a joint UK tour with the School in March beforehand, culminating in a gig in London at Bush Hall – “we’re mega excited about that”

SXSW Releases Preliminary Schedule. VERY Preliminary…

SXSW have now released what they’re calling a “preliminary” schedule. Except as far as the music is concerned, it’s so preliminary that every single showcase is tba. So, what you’ve really got is a bloody great big list of bands, all dumped in there on the Wednesday. Something to while away the time, though. It’s not the most user-friendly list of all time though, so I’ll wade through it and try and get some kind of British thing lashed together out of it. Still, though, hoping for awesome things from the iphone app they keep mentioning.

200+ More Bands For SXSW With 40+ More British Bands

SXSW have again updated their big list o’ bands, with another 40-odd British bands added to that list. No really big names added from the Brits point of view, although I’m chuffed to see some more Scottish bands on there in the well-formed shapes of St Deluxe and Fangs, but delighted to see Allo Darlin (pictured), Beans On Toast and Blue Roses on that list as well, but I’ve updated the British list here so you can check it out yourselves. Pretty impressive though – over three months to go and around a third of the bands are already confirmed… excited, oh yes.

Unicorn Kid Self-Confirms For SXSW, Bleep!

8-bit teenage chiptune phenomenon Unicorn Kid has stuck SXSW dates down on his myspace. Even though the over-talented little hoodie makes me feel about a hundred and fifty years old, this is good news all round.
